Don’t Skip This!: October 2014

I’ve decided that at the start of each month, I’ll list about 5 films that you should try and check out. There’s a lot of hit and miss stuff but there’s also some really great films that get quickly overshadowed.

October is always an interesting month for movies. It has it’s share of Oscar potential pictures and also some horror flicks. After looking through what this month has to offer, here’s what I think is worth checking out:

1. Gone Girl - October 3rd

I think this one that a lot of people are already planning on seeing so let this be a reminder for those reading this, that the movie comes out on the first Friday of the month.

Basically Ben Affleck’s wife goes missing and he becomes the top suspect after the case has gained lots of media attention. Sure, it sounds like your typical crime drama but this comes from a best selling book, written by Gillian Flynn AND it’s directed by David Fincher. Need I say more?

2. Whiplash - October 10th

If you are looking for just one reason why you should see this, the reason is:

Miles Teller.

Who? You mean the guy from Project Xand That Awkward Moment? Yes. I also mean the guy who was in The Spectacular Now that most people probably didn’t even get to see. I’m pushing this reason so hard because this is one talented guy. Unfortunately his big hits haven’t been from very good movies, but he still gives great performances with what he’s given. I highly recommend you all watch The Spectacular Now because he shows that he can act when given a good script.

And don’t think I forgot, but J.K. Simmons is the other obvious reason to see this. He plays an insane music instructor, and gives a crazy performance from what we’ve seen in the trailer. It’s a movie not to miss.

3. Birdman - October 17th

I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know much about Birdman for a while until recently. I’ve seen the name get thrown around a lot but it didn’t really catch my attention until I finally watched the trailer. I really can’t wait for this movie. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen, and I’m always so opened for movies like this.

It has such a bizarre concept and has a lot of big names in it. Just because it’s weird, don’t let that turn you off from it. If you’re going out to a movie and have the choice between this and some whacky found footage horror movie, give Birdman a chance.

4. St. Vincent - October 28th

Bill Murray.

5. Nightcrawler - October 31st

I actually got to see this at TIFF (full review coming soon), and this is one cool movie. Funny but dark, entertaining but twisted. It’s the perfect blend of a fun and thrilling movie. It’s so different and it keeps your full attention from beginning to end.

I’ll have to go in greater depth in my full review but for now make plans to see this movie!

These are just 5 of the many movies coming out this month, I’m sure there are other ones that maybe equally as good. Which films are you looking forward to see in October?

Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I’m alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again
However far away
I will always love you
